Katie is a 21-year-old university student, studying Media. When she is near CFLs she develops an “absence-like state”, where she is unable to concentrate and work. This is triggered almost immediately and means she frequently has to leave buildings, and is often incapable of understanding the content of her lectures. Her university’s library is particularly problematic and so she is forced to work elsewhere.
Katie has been aware of her problems from CFLs for many years, and has had to apply for exam concessions since she was 16. She worries about the future, especially as she is soon due to graduate. Interviews for large firms are often conducted in rooms with CFLs, and offices often contain this lighting.
“I worry about going to job interviews and trying to compete in the world of employment. Most buildings are changing to be like this, it makes me worried about the future.”
