Helen – London

I have difficulties with CFLs and possibly LEDs. In my case it seems to be the Very High Frequency sound of these CFLs causing me migraine (I’ve measured them with an iPhone). VHF sound is known to cause headache, nausea, etc. I’m trying to find out whether anyone has ever looked into the sound aspect of these light bulbs?

Very high frequency sound can cause headaches, nausea etc. (migraine). It’s woefully under researched. Similar frequencies are used in animal deterrents, which is how I became aware of the issues. What I’ve noticed is that those people who can hear the sound leave, if they can. Those who can’t hear it won’t leave, and therefore if they become symptomatic they have no way to be aware that the lighting is making a sound and relating it to their symptoms.

Additionally when children can hear it, e.g. at school, nursery, they cannot leave – they can become disruptive/distracted etc. and adults would typically not relate symptoms/behaviour to the sound of the lighting.

I am a mother trying to live daily life which had suddenly got so much harder.

I spent the holidays taking incandescent bulbs with me to relatives houses to replace their ecobulbs, to take away the high pitched sound some CFL produce. Also measured high pitched sound from one eco bulb, a fluorescent and two dimmer switches in a holiday cottage we visited – all of which I avoided or turned off to feel better.
