LightAware statement on LED streetlighting

LightAware is deeply concerned about the roll-out of LED street lighting. A section of the population is severely light sensitive and relies on the traditional street lighting infrastructure to access the street at  night. The roll-out raises severe issues of social exclusion and accessibility for those who cannot tolerate new forms of lighting.

Lightware also has serious concerns about the wider impact of LED street lighting on human health, wildlife and our environment. We feel that authorities need to consider the impact of street lighting policy on human health and wildlife.

In light of the warnings supported by the AMA and PHE reports, and the experience of people suffering pain from exposure to LED lighting, LightAware would advocate the following:

1) A moratorium on the roll-out of LED streetlighting
2) Retention of High-Energy Discharge lighting until proper appropriate standards have been introduced.
3) A ban on exposed LED
4) Proper research into the effect of LED lighting on humans and wildlife, taking into account the difference between LED and conventional light sources
