‘UFO’ street-light plan switched off by one-man army

“Mr Nicholas said research on the ‘too bright’ lights has linked them to disrupted sleep patterns and that the beams could dazzle drivers.

Opponents have also said the new lights would not be in keeping with conservation areas – many of which have heritage ‘swan-neck’ cast iron lamp-posts which could be unsuitable for the new lights.

Birmingham and Bath councils have already been forced to ditch or delay the installation of LED street lights because residents said they looked like UFOs – while Salford residents complained they were not bright enough when the lights were trialled in 2011.”
