House of Lords light and noise inquiry, 2023

HOUSE OF LORDS Science and Technology Committee

The neglected pollutants: the effects of artificial light and noise on human health

In 2023 House of Lords Science and Technology Committee called for evidence in a new inquiry into the impact of artificial light and noise on human health. LightAware was among those submitting a comprehensive response on health effects, calling for rigorous standards for brightness, flicker and colour temperature of external lighting. The process called on leading medical experts in ophthalmology, neurology and circadian biology. The resulting report described artificial light and noise as ‘neglected pollutants’ that are “poorly understood and poorly regulated. Negative impacts on human health include disrupted sleep and circadian rhythms, through which both noise and light pollution can contribute to heart disease and premature death.”
